Did you know the Great Wall of China is not one continuous wall? It’s a vast network of walls and fortifications built by various Chinese dynasties over a span of 2,400 years. What we often picture today was largely constructed during the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644 AD.
A Historical Feat
Though the first walls date back to the 7th century BC, the Ming Dynasty’s contribution added major defensive structures that we recognize today. These walls were built to protect China from invasions and regulate trade along the Silk Road. Stretching over 13,000 miles or 21,000 kilometers, the Great Wall crosses deserts, plains, and mountains.
Fun Fact
Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China is not visible from space with the naked eye. This myth has been debunked by astronauts who confirmed it’s nearly impossible to spot due to the wall’s thin structure relative to Earth’s vast terrain.
